The Te Mata Learner

Please note: Our Structured Literacy Information and Resources Page 2024
is currently being updated to reflect our current practices.

Te Mata is a future focused school where the learner is at the heart of everything we do. We are known for a culture of ‘seeking the heights’ in a wide range of academics, sports, culture and the arts.

Our Vision is quite simply - 'Seek the Heights'   We commit to growing confident and capable kids who seek their heights now and in the future and are committed to growing and educating our children in a nurturing environment where we live our values together.

We support and challenge every child to learn for life and be the best they can be, now and in their future.  We are fortunate to have a team of passionate and reflective teachers who create safe and positive learning environments with effective teacher-student ratios.  We put high importance on relationships and value the wellbeing of all.  We love kids and celebrate their successes.

We provide children with exciting and innovative learning opportunities and experiences that focus on their development as a whole child. We focus strongly on developing a ‘growth mindset’ and the learning dispositions that enable them to adapt, participate fully and be successful in an ever-changing world.

Our local curriculum is underpinned by our learning frame.  Our school values are at the core as we build our learns’ dispositions through developing competencies.

Extra-Curricular Learning Opportunities

Our Vision statement of  ‘Seek the Heights’:  Growing confident and capable kids who seek their heights now and in the future is our schools commitment to providing Te Mata School children with a range of opportunities to develop skills across the whole curriculum.  As well as providing these skills through our learning programmes, we offer the following extracurricular options.

Sports

We provide a range of sporting opportunities for all ages.  This includes our school wide events:  Cross Country, Athletics and Swimming Sports.  There are also opportunities to represent Te Mata School in local sports competitions, such as Orienteering, Hockey, Miniball, Cricket, Tennis, Touch, Netball, Weetbix Tri and Rippa Rugby.  Check out our Sport page on the Te Mata website for more information on these opportunities.

Cultural/Arts

At Te Mata we take pride in providing a range of cultural opportunities for our children to experience and grow. These groups are an important part of the “special character” of our place. Our children enjoy the opportunity to be part of Kapa Haka, Syndicate Choirs and Dance Festivals.

Music Tuition

Children in the Senior School have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument in a small group.  Tutor fees and instrument hire are met by parents.  More information can be found on our website.

Leadership

At Te Mata School we believe that all children have the qualities and attributes to be leaders and as a result, we offer a range of leadership opportunities such as House Captains, flag monitors, librarians, School Councillors and LIMs (Leaders of the Middle School) to name a few.

Support for Children

All children in New Zealand have the right to access education and it is the role of the school to ensure that educational opportunities are equitable and meet the needs of the individual child.

We aim to meet the needs of children who require additional support using an inclusive, holistic and team approach.  The team consists of the child, the whanau, the school and when required outside agencies.

Children with Special Abilities

Throughout the year the school offers special programmes to children who have been identified as having a special ability.  These programmes give our students the opportunity to shine and further master their gifts.
