Procedural writing (instructions) inspired by an extremely amusing movie of a Dad following instructions as they were written.
The kids in the movie wrote instructions down for their Dad but missed out specific pieces of information, so what Dad did, was exactly what the kids had written down. After viewing the peanut butter and jelly sandwich making movie, demonstrating how instructions can go so wrong, Te Ako Zone students (Year 3 & 4) reflected on how silly Dad looked. As a class they then wrote their own instructions but they made sure nothing was missed out and that they were precise!
The procedural writing process included:
Brainstorming ideas to write instructions about.
The teachers modelling how to write instructions and supporting the students in writing their own.
Students picked one idea to write about, which included goals, materials and methods.
Buddy editing and reworking their writing.
Sharing and celebrating writing successes.
The students shared the following: ‘It was fun, the movie was funny, we loved writing it and just being able to do it was great’.
